The following review of 2018 Mathical Award Winner Baby Goes to Market by author Atinuke was submitted by Mathical Selection Committee member Candice Price.
This is a great book that explores counting in a fun way with African culture as the background. I had the pleasure of reading this book for the first time with my three-year-old niece. She loved it! She loved the story about a hungry, sweet little baby who, unbeknownst to his mother, receives several treats from people at the market while she carries him wrapped around her back. There was a pure delight in my niece’s eyes as she counted up the treats in the basket as the baby added them to the basket. She also enjoyed subtracting the treats that the baby ate. And all of this was shown by beautiful illustrations by Angela Brooksbank which showcased parts of African culture with bright colors and beautiful patterns. My niece asks me to read it whenever I come over. I recommend for any family… my family loves it!
