Mathical is bigger than a book prize.
Once a book is selected for the Mathical List, the next chapter in our relationship begins….
We distribute Mathical books to kids in need both locally in the Bay Area and nationally in Title I schools.
We connect authors with schools and libraries to host book readings.
We encourage authors & publishers to identify their Mathical books’ accessibility in terms of price, translations, representation, mixed media, and more.
We feature authors and their love of reading, math and book design.
We invite student guest bloggers to review Mathical titles.
We gather resources for teaching Mathical titles in language arts, mathematics, and after-school settings.
Mathical opens doors to all.
When Mathical was born in 2014, the goal was to start a quiet avalanche of new books:
–Main characters who loved math
–Storylines woven through with puzzles
–Vivid nonfiction showing the patterns behind what each kid loves most in the world.
Oh, how we’ve grown!
Now, ten years into the fun, here are some of our guiding principles:
We encourage children to see themselves reflected in mathematics.
We welcome titles that create a pathway for all to enjoy math through literature.
We are age-inclusive, spanning picture books for pre-readers to sharp, edgy titles for young adults.
What comes next?
We love bringing you some of the most interesting new releases, and getting them out into the hands of kids. We need your help to do that in new ways!
We trust kids and their sheer delight as a signal of a solid contender.
We want to hear from you about your favorite, kid-tested books.
We want to support joyful experimentation in the classroom.
Mathical is a community.
Purpose and play bring us together.
Mathical is bigger than a book list.
It is both a journey and a living destination.
Please join us!
